Navigation is here

When we began our project 4.5 years ago we had a goal of finding a permanent solution to traffic. Today we are happy to release the next iteration of development for our application. We have finalized a working version of navigation so that our users can get a clear and easy route to their desired location.

New Offline Maps Manager

For the past couple of months we have been experimenting with a new design for the offline maps download manager. The idea was to create a UI that was so easy and understandable that non-tech users would know immediately how to use it.

3d-axis camera in an open world with 3 billions vertices

One of the features we are excited about in kMaps is the point of view functionality with 3-axis motion. To change the angle, put two fingers on the map and then swipe upward or downwards. Currently, there is a limitation for the minimal angle which will be changed with later releases of the product.

Save your map for later

When using kMaps downloading areas is now easier than ever. After navigating to the settings menu, select “download maps” and this simple download manager will pop up. Manipulate the map showing the area to save for offline use and also change the rectangular download window to represent the exact area desired.

kMaps can render an open world view with 3 billions vertices. The camera can move around the open world rendering large amounts of data. However, the app can’t load all the data at once so we just make a separate rendering cycle with different camera parameters.

The Hsuehshan Tunnel traffic

We designed an app which visualizes traffic flows in order to better understand the reasons for a decreasing of average speeds. The app provides data, represented visually, which anyone can use to make a more informed decision about their commute.

Development news July 2015

A Convienient Gesture

One of the main goals that we have at kMaps is to always be as user-friendly and functional as possible. We want to make ‘getting around,’ as easy as possible. We urge people to give us feedback in order to shape our product to their liking. Since the release of our ‘pilot’ version we’ve had feedback coming in from multiple channels and have considered all of it.

JUST RELEASED – Better rendering, better search

We have been 6 months silent after first version, which is quite long, but in that time we’ve done a lot. First we would like to say thanks to those of you who gave us feedback and for helping to determine our priorities. Input is very important, especially when resources are very limited.

For the past two months we have been working very hard to make search available for you to use when our app goes live. We have also been working on its speed and compression. With the release date coming so soon we wanted to show you what will be available to you. Enjoy this video and know that very very soon you will be able to use our app personally on your device.

Are offline maps killing online maps?

In this day and age it’s very common to keep your portable device strapped to your hip at all times. People seem to always be listening, sharing, or connecting, at every moment possible. Some say it hinders us and others say it keeps us more connected to the people we love.

Global Traffic Mapping

In this day and age it’s very common to keep your portable device strapped to your hip at all times. People seem to always be listening, sharing, or connecting, at every moment possible. Some say it hinders us and others say it keeps us more connected to the people we love.
